Esma is the Turkish pronunciation of the Arabic word ismah. It is an indirect Quranic name for boys and girls that means âhighnessâ, âmajestyâ, âpurity from sinâ. In the Ayyubid era Isma used to be a title for noblewomen, such as Esma ad-Deen Khatun, wife of Saladin. Esma is derived from the AIN-SAD-M root which is used in a number of places in the Quran.
