Bettuwl is an indirect Quranic name for girls that means “ascetic”, “devoted to God”, “pious virgin”. Christians use it to refer to Mary/Maryam, mother of Prophet Jesus/Isa peace be upon him, while Muslims, both Sunni and Shiite, use it as a nickname for Fatima, daughter of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah upon him and his family and companions, due to her pious and ascetic character.
